First Baby Francois’ Langur Ever Born at the Saint Louis Zoo

Just in time for Halloween, we share with you our newest and cutest li’l pumpkin-haired baby, Rhubarb! The 1-month-old female Francois’ langur was born on September 30 to mom Dolly and dad Deshi at the Michael and Quirsis Riney Primate Canopy Trails at the Saint Louis Zoo.

10,000th hellbender released to the wild

The Saint Louis Zoo, Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) are celebrating a historic milestone in hellbender conservation in Missouri. As of August 2022, the total Saint Louis Zoo-raised endangered Ozark and eastern hellbenders released into the wild since 2008 now numbers over 10,000 individuals.

Turtle Dogs

Turtle dogs! Saint Louis Zoo scientists have partnered with some very special assistants: seven turtle-detecting spaniels. The Boykin spaniels helped us track and retrieve box turtles – their strong sense of smell allows them to find hidden turtles our researchers might miss. (And they're faster than us, too!)

Helping the Cuban Crocodile

Last month, a team of reptile and health specialists from four zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), led by Jamie Palmer, Saint Louis Zoo Institution for Conservation Medicine technician, and Lauren Augustine, Curator of Herpetology at the Saint Louis Zoo, traveled to Matanzas province, Cuba, to conduct health evaluations on Cuban crocodiles at the Zapata Crocodile Farm (ZCF).
