We're thrilled to share that nearly 6-year-old female polar bear Laerke (pronounced LAIR-keh) arrived safely on Nov. 5, 2026, from the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma, Wash.
Laerke is settling into a private, chilled space behind the scenes for now. We've already caught her playing in her giant ice bath! Introductions between Laerke and nearly 4-year-old Zoo resident male polar bear Kallu will take some time. Guests may not see the pair together in the habitat until early 2027.
With only 26,000 individuals remaining in the wild, polar bears face a high risk of extinction. Moves like this are critical to protect a future for the vulnerable species.
