Historic Bird House renovation to begin at the Saint Louis Zoo this spring

The Bird House will close for much of 2026 to undergo upgrades

The Saint Louis Zoo's historic Bird House will temporarily close this spring for renovations designed to preserve the iconic, nearly 100-year-old building.

Likely beginning this March, the Bird House will close for much of 2026 to undergo upgrades that will keep the building and its inhabitants looking and feeling their best. Renovations include a new roof, HVAC system, skylights and outer-building repairs.

The Bird House was designed by architect John E. Wallace and first opened to the public in 1930. It set a high bar for other zoological institutions by housing animals in naturalistic settings while providing a wonderful experience for guests.

For the duration of the work, many birds will be relocated to other zoos or will move to new habitats behind the scenes.

The Zoo invites guests to visit the colorful Bird House residents before renovations begin. Once the work is complete, guests might even get the chance to say hello to new bird species from around the world.
