Giraffe Ella

Beloved female giraffe has died

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Ella, our beloved, 15½ -year-old female reticulated giraffe.

Last Friday, Feb. 13, Ella was found unable to stand in the giraffe barn. Despite immediate action from our Animal Care and Animal Health teams, her condition did not improve.  After careful assessment of Ella’s health and quality of life, the decision was made to humanely euthanize her.

Because of their large size, it takes a great amount of effort for giraffes to get up from a laying position, even young and healthy ones. Ella was in the senior age range for her species and receiving treatment for chronic arthritis.

Ella moved to the Zoo in 2012 and became recognizable as one of the tallest giraffes at Red Rocks. Staff and guests alike loved her independent, curious and playful personality — especially her love for playing with sticks! Ella enjoyed exploring her habitat and learning new behaviors from her care team. She helped create meaningful connections with guests during behind-the-scenes tours and giraffe feedings.

She made a lasting impact on all who knew her and will be greatly missed.

We kindly ask that you keep Ella’s dedicated care team in your thoughts during this difficult time.
