PERISSODACTYLS - UNGULATES
EQUIDS
Recommendations
- PZP vaccine (F) - short term: 2-3 consecutive years
- Regu-mate® (F) - standard horse dose is 0.044 mg/kg daily
- Improvest® (M or F)
Cautions
- Progestins may cause endometritis, pyometra and hydrometra
- MGA efficacy has not been established in equids
- GnRH agonists previously tested were ineffective in males
- PZP may not be reversible after long-term use (>3 consecutive years)
Research and Monitoring
- Suprelorin (deslorelin) implant efficacy in females
- Surveillance for deleterious effects
Contraception Annual Survey
Tissue Submission Form – Pathology
Adverse Reactions Report
TAPIRS AND RHINOCEROS
Recommendations
- Depo-Provera® (F)
Tapirs: 5 mg/kg body weight every 3 months - Regu-mate® (F)
Tapirs: estimate standard horse dose (0.044 mg/kg daily); data are limited in this taxon and the standard dose may not be effective for all individuals - PZP vaccine (F) - short term: 2-3 consecutive years
- Improvest® (M or F) - Improvest may be effective in tapirs and rhinos, but there are currently no data on efficacy and reversibility in these taxa.
Cautions
- Synthetic progestins may cause endometritis, pyometra and hydrometra
- PZP may not be reversible after long-term use (>3 consecutive years)
- Regu-mate not yet tested in tapirs
Research and Monitoring
- Suprelorin (deslorelin) implant efficacy in females
- Surveillance for deleterious effects
Contraception Annual Survey
