PERISSODACTYLS - UNGULATES

EQUIDS

Recommendations

  1. PZP vaccine (F) - short term: 2-3 consecutive years
  2. Regu-mate® (F) - standard horse dose is 0.044 mg/kg daily
  3. Improvest® (M or F)

Cautions

  1. Progestins may cause endometritis, pyometra and hydrometra
  2. MGA efficacy has not been established in equids
  3. GnRH agonists previously tested were ineffective in males
  4. PZP may not be reversible after long-term use (>3 consecutive years)

Research and Monitoring

  1. Suprelorin (deslorelin) implant efficacy in females
  2. Surveillance for deleterious effects
    Contraception Annual Survey

    Tissue Submission Form
    – Pathology
    Adverse Reactions Report

TAPIRS AND RHINOCEROS

Recommendations

  1. Depo-Provera® (F)
Tapirs: 5 mg/kg body weight every 3 months
  2. Regu-mate® (F)
Tapirs: estimate standard horse dose (0.044 mg/kg daily); data are limited in this taxon and the standard dose may not be effective for all individuals
  3. PZP vaccine (F) - short term: 2-3 consecutive years
  4. Improvest® (M or F) - Improvest may be effective in tapirs and rhinos, but there are currently no data on efficacy and reversibility in these taxa.

Cautions

  1. Synthetic progestins may cause endometritis, pyometra and hydrometra
  2. PZP may not be reversible after long-term use (>3 consecutive years)
  3. Regu-mate not yet tested in tapirs

Research and Monitoring

  1. Suprelorin (deslorelin) implant efficacy in females
  2. Surveillance for deleterious effects
    Contraception Annual Survey

    Tissue Submission Form
    – Pathology
    Adverse Reactions Report
