The Saint Louis Zoo Sumatran Orangutan family is comprised of three individuals: one male and two females. The male is Juara and the females are Merah (the Wily Thinker) and Rubih (Baby Girl).

Who's Who

Merah

Patient, calculating and picky are characteristics that help make Merah a great mom. An avid nester, she is picky about what she'll use to build her nest -- arranging it just like she wants it. She enjoys wearing T-shirts or making “capes” out of cloth. Her patience is helpful when using a tool to fish honey out of a tree stump.

Rubih

Although the baby of the family, Rubih has already begun to show a petite and cute personality. She is exploring the world but never far from mom. She is very athletic.

Juara

Juara came to the Saint Louis Zoo in 2007. He is a magnificent male orangutan with beautiful, long, blondish-red hair weighing about 375 pounds. He is very easy-going and very respectful of Merah and her baby. Merah and Juara have been getting along well and Rubih has been making his acquaintance -- though always under mom's very watchful eye.
