Penguin & Puffin Coast, with outdoor and indoor exhibits allowing a close-up experience with the birds, opened in 2003. Humboldt, king, gentoo, and rockhopper penguins from the southern hemisphere, and horned and tufted puffins from the northern hemisphere are among the species on display. The Mary Ann Lee Conservation Carousel, featuring one-of-a-kind hand-carved wooden animals representing species at the Saint Louis Zoo, also opened in summer of 2003. The Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Institute, focusing on twelve conservation centers around the world, was introduced in 2004. "The WildCare Institute is dedicated to creating a sustainable future for wildlife and for people around the world." It is supported by an endowment from the Saint Louis Zoo Friends Association, and is funded by grants, partnering corporations, and private donations. Also in 2004, the Edward K. Love Conservation Foundation Cypress Swamp exhibit opened in the renovated 1904 World's Fair Flight Cage. The Donn and Marilyn Lipton Fragile Forest, with outdoor yards for chimpanzees and orangutans, opened in 2005.
