In May of 1998, the new Emerson Children's Zoo, featuring river otters, lorikeets, meerkats, a play area and more opened as the first phase of redevelopment of the western portion of the Zoo. It was the first exhibit completed as part of Campaign 2004: Gateway to the Animal World.
