1989

The Living World, opened in spring of 1989, is an education and visitors center located between the Administration Building and the Children's Zoo. Within the two-storied building are classrooms, a reference library and teacher resource center, an auditorium, two exhibit halls emphasizing evolution and ecology, an enlarged gift shop, a restaurant and offices.

The early 1990s brought continued expansion, development and commitment to both the Zoo's visitors and the preservation of wildlife. Two major buildings, Lakeside Cafe, a restaurant for visitors, and the Endangered Species Research Center & Veterinary Hospital opened in 1993.

The same year, the Zoo expanded by 355 acres with the donation of the Sears Lehmann farm property west of St. Louis to be used for breeding endangered species and for educational purposes.

Smaller construction projects included renovation of outdoor cages in the Bird House wing, construction of new outdoor cages on the east side of the Primate House, and an information kiosk outside the Endangered Species Research Center & Veterinary Hospital to provide visitors with a glimpse of what goes on inside.
