Scout Badge Programs

The Saint Louis Zoo supports scouting and its commitment to help girls and boys explore and care for the natural world. We are proud to offer education programs that help scouts work to complete the requirements for many of their badge programs.

Brownie Try-It Day Programs

At these events, Brownie troops can spend a couple hours, or a leisurely day at the Zoo doing activities to earn a Try-It badge. Registered troops will receive a guide booklet upon checking in at the Zoo. The booklet will show where activity stations are located and will help you to record your experiences. Zoo Instructors will be on hand to lead or help with activities. Activity stations will be set up and can be visited anytime during the event and can be completed in any order. Brownies completing at least four activities can receive their Try-it badge at the Zoo.

For registration questions please contact the Saint Louis Zoo's Education Department at (314) 646-4544 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or e-mail at educationquestions@stlzoo.org.

Cub Scout Activities -- Wildlife Academics Pin/Sharing Your World with Wildlife

During this Saturday event you will explore endangered animals that live in the Zoo's Red Rocks area, learn how to identify animal tracks, meet a Zoo educator and more. Wolf and Bear Cub Scout packs will enjoy walking around the Zoo while earning their Wildlife Academics Pin. In addition, Bear Cub Scout packs can accomplish their Sharing Your World with Wildlife Activity.

Upon check-in, scouts will receive a booklet which will guide them through the appropriate activity stations to help them earn their activity or pin. Activity stations include:

  • Meeting a wildlife conservation educator and seeing some cool biofacts (animal artifacts like bones, feathers, etc.). (Requirement 5c)
  • Exploring animals at Red Rocks and learning why some species become endangered or extinct. (Requirement 5e)
  • Visiting the Insectarium and discovering animals that use camouflage to protect themselves.
  • Learning how to bring wildlife into your backyard by creating a birdbath.
  • Investigating different classes of animals and creating a collage.
  • Learning how to identify some common animal tracks and making a plaster cast of your favorite track to take home.

In order to complete their pin, scouts will need to observe their birdbath at home for one week. When all activities are complete, they may show their booklet to their cub master to receive their patch or pin.
