Snooze at the Zoo - Summer 2010
Nocturnal Safari

Come spend a night at the Zoo while you complete some of your Outdoor Activity Award requirements. The Zoo is an amazing place to be at night. You will discover what it takes to be a nocturnal animal as you explore the Zoo at night, see and touch live animals, and "become " a nocturnal animal trying to survive. Have you ever been in your sleeping bag and heard a peacock call, a sea lion bark, or a lion roar?! This is scout camp-out you don't want to miss. This is an exciting chance to see the Zoo animals active at night, sleep outside under the stars (weather permitting), and meet scouts from around the area.

Registrations for the Summer Snooze at the Zoo program must be postmarked on March 31, 2010 or after. Registrations may be dropped off at the Education Department, Monday through Friday, beginning on April 1, 2010.

Cub Scout Day Program

Wolf and Bear: Wildlife Academic Pin
Bear: Sharing Your World with Wildlife Achievement

On this Sunday event you will explore endangered animals that live at Red Rocks, learn how to identify animal tracks, meet a Zoo educator and more. Bring your Cub Scout pack to the Zoo and enjoy a walk around the Zoo while earning your Sharing your World with Wildlife achievement or your Wildlife Academic Pin. Upon check in you will receive a booklet which will guide you through the appropriate activity stations to help you earn your achievement or pin. Activity stations include:

  • Meet a wildlife conservation educator and see some cool biofacts used in their programs.
  • Explore animals at Red Rocks and learn why animals become endangered or extinct.
  • Visit the Insectarium and discover animals that use camouflage to protect themselves.
  • Learn how to bring wildlife into your backyard by creating a birdfeeder.
  • Investigate different classes of animals and create a collage.
  • Learn how to identify some common animal tracks and make a plaster cast of your favorite track to take home.

In order to complete your pin you will need to observe your birdfeeder at home for one week. When all activities are complete you may show your booklet to your cub master to receive your patch or pin.

To register, please download the Scout Program Registration packet (154K pdf). For more information, please call the Education Department at (314) 646-4544.
