What adaptations enhance an animal’s ability to thrive in the grasslands of the world? As we tour the grazers and browsers at the Zoo, we will discover the unique characteristics that allow herbivores to dominate these habitats.

How can animals survive in an environment with a scarcity of water? With a visit to the hoofed animals and reptiles that live in these harsh habitats, we will discover how animals have adapted to survive with limited resources.

POLAR ADAPTATIONS

Join us for a tour to the Penguin & Puffin Coast exhibit as well as to neighboring animals that hail from the polar ends of our planet. Students compare and contrast the characteristics and adaptations of penguins, puffins and other polar wildlife and examine convergent evolution.

Conservation Tours

THE RIVER’S EDGE

Grades 4-6
Tour length: 45 minutes

Our journey through the River's Edge will illustrate the beneficial, competitive or detrimental interactions between humans and animals in the wild. As we visit the elephants, hyenas and cheetahs, we will examine the complexities that surround animal-human conflicts and possible solutions to these issues.

ENDANGERED SPECIES

What has happened to the birds on the island of Guam, or to the tropical bears? What is the HIPPO Dilemma? During a visit to the bear and bird areas of the Zoo, we will investigate the reasons why these and other animals are declining in their natural habitats and what is being done to help.

Ecology Tours

How is it that the sun and the organisms eaten by animals are connected? As we visit Big Cat Country and the Antelope Yards, we will investigate the many ways animals obtain their food. We will examine predator-prey relationships, food chains and webs that all illustrate the energy transfer among organisms in an ecosystem.

RAINFOREST

What is a rainforest, and who lives there? Visit the apes, birds, and reptiles at the Zoo to discover how such a diverse number and variety of animals live in this ecosystem. We will focus on the way animals interact with each other and their environment.
