What kinds of animals would we see if we visited our neighboring continent to the south? Besides monkeys, we would see different kinds of birds and reptiles. We will examine the adaptations these animals have that enable them to survive in their tropical world.

RAINFOREST

How can so many animals live in the rainforest? Visit the apes, birds or reptiles at the Zoo to discover the many adaptations these animals have to help them live high in the trees, under tree roots or above the canopy. We will also focus on the physical features that help them survive in the jungle.

GRASSLANDS

What adaptations enhance an animal’s ability to thrive in the grasslands of the world? As we tour the grazers and browsers at the Zoo, we will discover the unique characteristics that allow herbivores to dominate these habitats.

DESERTS

How can animals survive in an environment with a scarcity of water? With a visit to the hoofed animals and reptiles that live in these harsh habitats, we will discover how animals have adapted to survive with limited resources.

POLAR ADAPTATIONS

Grades 4-6
Tour length: 45 minutes
Fee: $55 (ZMD $40)
Offered September through May

Join us for a tour to the Penguin & Puffin Coast exhibit as well as to neighboring animals that hail from the polar ends of our planet. Students compare and contrast the characteristics and adaptations of penguins, puffins and other polar wildlife and examine convergent evolution.
