Adaptations Classes

ON THE MOVE

Grades K-3

This class looks at various forms of animal locomotion as examples of an adaptation. Hopping, swimming, climbing, flying and slithering animals are just a few of the movements featured. Examine the animals' body parts to discover how and why they move the way they do.

BORN TO BE WILD

Do all animal babies look like their parents? Which animals hatch from eggs, and which are live-born? This class compares animal babies and development while introducing the basic concepts of life cycles (including metamorphosis) in both invertebrates and vertebrates.

Are all creepy crawlies alike? Through sorting, investigating, and meeting live animals, students will learn the basic characteristics of insects and other arthropods.

It's not just their body coverings that are different! Compare and contrast the skeletons of four groups of animals. This overview will cover the major characteristics of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

SLIME AND SCALES

How are salamanders and lizards alike? How are they different? Through the use of live amphibians and reptiles, students will be introduced to the basic characteristics of these cold-blooded animals.

Conservation Classes

In this class, we will compare how animals get the care they need as pets, in the wild, and at the Saint Louis Zoo. Students will meet our "Missouri Tree" and discover the role of trees for animals in their neighborhood.

CONSERVATION CONNECTIONS

Ecology Classes

What is a "habitat?" Choose from one of the specific continents listed below. Students will meet and learn about animals from that continent and explore their specific habitat needs (food, shelter, water and space). Visit us throughout the year and take all three classes!

Students meet and learn about animals from Africa and explore their habitat needs.

Students meet and learn about animals from South America and explore their habitat needs.

North American Animals

Students trace the food chain from sunlight to decomposition. Who are the producers and consumers, predators and prey in the web of life? Students will meet animals that eat plants, animals that eat animals, and animals that eat both.
