ZOO COLORS

Students are introduced to the concept of camouflage while exploring the colors of animals, where they live and how they survive. Animal biofacts like pelts and feathers are used for a hands-on exploration.

ONE, ZOO, THREE

Grades PS-K
Program length: 30 or 45 minutes
Offered year-round

2, 4, 6, 8...counting legs is really great! We will take a look at live animals to practice counting and make observations about numbers in nature. Stories and other activities add to our fun. "Count" on this to be a popular program!

WHAT'S FOR BREAKFAST?

Grades PS-3
Program length: 45 minutes
Offered September through April

What determines the food that an animal has for breakfast (or the rest of the day)? Is it the habitat, the type of teeth the animal has, or something else? Students will examine different foods and learn about physical adaptations to discover just what an animal might have for breakfast.

SURVIVING THE SEASONS

Grades PS-3
Program length: 45 minutes
Offered September through April

Discover changes that animals make in order to adapt to the four seasons. Find out which animals are most active now and learn about their adaptations to seasonal changes in climate. The focus of this class will depend on the current season.

HOW ANIMALS MOVE

Grades K-2
Program length: 45 minutes
Offered year-round

How many ways can animals move? Using live animals and experiments, we will explore how animals run, swim, and fly. A post-visit activity is included which encourages students to label animal pictures with action words to describe movement.

FLYING FRIENDS (New!)

What kinds of animals fly? Is there a difference between flying and gliding? Learn about why and how animals fly and meet live animals. Practice skills to help you identify wild birds.

All animals have unique behaviors and physical characteristics to help them survive in their particular homes. This student-driven class explores where animals live and how they have become adapted to surviving in those habitats.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Grades 4-6
Program length: 45 minutes
Offered September through April

Do animals follow the food pyramid? Learn about what animals eat and find out how they receive proper nutrition both at the Zoo and in the wild. Meet a few animals and see what they have to teach us about eating well.

SHERLOCK BONES (New!)

Grades 5-8
Program length: 45 minutes
Offered year-round

Bones from the Saint Louis Zoo have been stolen! We've recovered them, but all the labels are missing. Learn how to identify skulls and other bones and find out what these objects tell us about animal survival. Live animals will be presented once the mystery has been solved.
