Responsibilities: Lead activities, crafts, games, tours, songs and live animal presentations. Programs include Snooze at the Zoo overnights for scout troops, Wild Nights overnights for school groups and families, scout badge programs, Animal Adventure birthday parties, and a variety of special events held throughout the year. Help to provide an educational, fun and safe environment for children, families and Zoo visitors. Help to maintain program areas and supplies, and help with program set-up and clean-up. Model responsible conservation behavior. Overnight programs occur on Friday and Saturday nights during June, July, August, and November through April, and various weeknights throughout the year. Overnight hours are approximately 4:30 p.m. - 9:30 a.m. Most Zoo special events occur in the evening (i.e. Pumpkin Prowl, Wild Lights) or weekends (i.e. Earth Day, Mardi Gras, etc.). Other opportunities may also be available. Weekly hours vary widely throughout the year depending on programming.
Qualifications: Must have completed two years of college and have experience teaching/working with children aged 1-12, adults, and family groups. Must have an understanding of biology, ecology, wildlife conservation and environmental education theory and practices, and the desire to share the wonders of the natural world with children. Must be trained or willing to be trained in First Aid, CPR, AED, animal handling, and follow Zoo animal handling guidelines. Previous animal handling experience preferred. Must have a negative TB test and submit to a thorough background check and drug test. Must be able to work a varied and flexible work schedule including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays.
