This tropical highland snake is one of many pitviper species that are threatened with extinction as their habitat is destroyed. However, as is the case with most snakes, this snake's conservation status has not been critically examined. Worldwide, less than 12 of the 157 types of pitvipers are officially listed as threatened or endangered. Yet some biologists estimate that 60% of all species in that group are in danger of extinction.
