Black-headed Python

Blackheaded_python_sm.jpg: Black-headed python
Range: Northern Australia
Habitat: Woodlands, grasslands, marshes, swamps, semi-desert areas
Conservation Status: Not listed by IUCN
Scientific Name: Aspidites melanocephalus

The reason this snake's head is black has to do with the animal's habit of basking in the sun. Most snakes lay their whole body in the sun to soak up its warmth on cool days, though this behavior exposes them to predators. But snakes with dark heads can bask with only their heads exposed. That way, the warmth quickly reaches their brain and sense organs, making them alert, yet they are less vulnerable to predators.
