Inland Bearded Dragon

bearded_dragon_sm.jpg: Bearded dragon
Range: Eastern and central Australia
Habitat: Dry forests, scrublands, deserts
Conservation Status: Not listed by IUCN
Scientific Name: Pogona vitticeps
It’s not hard to guess how this lizard got its name, especially when it puts on a threat display. That's when it expands its body, accentuating the spines that cover it. The pouch under the animal’s throat also puffs out, giving it the appearance of a “beard.”  When the dragon opens its mouth wide, it exposes the bright yellow color inside -- all in all, an unappetizing meal for any predator!
