Range: Guatemala to Costa Rica (in Central America)
Habitat: Forested areas near rivers and streams
Conservation Status: Not listed by IUCN
Scientific Name: Basiliscus plumifrons

This lizard is often called the "Jesus Christ lizard" in its native habitat, Central America, because of its ability to seemingly walk on water. The basilisk can in fact dash wildly over the surface of rivers and streams to escape would-be predators. It does this with the help of fringes of skin on the toes of its rear feet. These provide extra surface area between its feet and the water, allowing the lizard to rapidly skim the water's surface on its hind legs.

Did You Know?

An adult male green basilisk has a fin-shaped crest on its back and tail and a double crest on its head.  The animal uses these in displays to females and to other males.
