Range: Northern and central South America
Habitat: Fast-moving, freshwater streams or rivers in forested areas
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Paleosuchus palpebrosus

This small, primitive species is often referred to as the smooth-fronted caiman due to the lack of bony ridges around the eyes and across the snout. The reddish colored head and mottled jaws provide excellent camouflage as it sits among floating dead leaves in rivers and streams. This solitary, territorial reptile is generally active only after dark.
