The Saint Louis Zoo is sad to announce that one of its gorillas died on Saturday, February 28, 2009, in a tragic accident. Muchana, an eight-year-old male Western Lowland Gorilla, was found entangled in a rope in his sleeping quarters when his keepers came in to begin their work that morning. Keepers, curators and the Zoo's veterinary team were unable to revive Muchana despite heroic efforts.
Everyone at the Zoo who knew Muchana is devastated by his passing. Zoo officials are organizing grief counseling for the staff to help them deal with this loss.
