Range: Canada, United States (except central Plains), northern Mexico
Habitat: Forests, woodlands, brushlands
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Ursus americanus

Compared with the grizzly and other brown bears, the American black bear is a more secretive animal. It prefers to live in deep forest cover rather than in open land. Black bears feed on bulbs, tubers, berries and nuts, as well as fish and small mammals.

Their shy nature may be one reason this species has been able to survive over a wide range in North America. Even though black bears had disappeared from Missouri, they are slowly making a comeback in the Ozarks because of past reintroduction efforts in nearby Arkansas.

Did You Know?

Not all black bears are black. They can range in color from white and blue to brown and black.
