These are the most common hawks in North America, as well as in Missouri. These expert fliers can soar for up to nine hours on warm air currents, keeping a sharp eye out for small prey on the ground. Red-tailed hawks also like to perch along roadsides on fences or poles, waiting to catch prey off-guard. Their diet consists of rats, mice, and other small mammals.
