The kestrel is commonly found throughout most of the United States. It is actually a member of the falcon family (although its other name is sparrow hawk). Kestrels are often seen perched on branches and signs along roads, where they keep a lookout for small reptiles, insects, mice, and small birds. 

Adult kestrels weigh only about a fourth of a pound. They can reach speeds of 25 miles per hour when diving through the air.
