Diamond Dove

diamond_dove_sm.jpg: Diamond dove
Range: Australia
Habitat: Dry grasslands
Conservation Status: Common
Scientific Name: Geopelia cuneata

This little beauty is the smallest of the Australian doves.  The diamond dove lives in dry grasslands, where it hunts on the ground for seeds and insects. When startled, the bird flies to the safety of nearby bushes and trees, where it also roosts at night.

Diamond doves are social birds. They're usually found in pairs or in groups of up to 20 to 30 birds. Breeding occurs throughout the year, but often stops during times of drought. Both parents help build the nest: the male brings twigs and other plant material to the female, who weaves them into a circular shape. The pair takes turns sitting on the eggs and feeding the young when they hatch.
