Helmeted Curassow

Northern_helmeted_curassow_sm.jpg: Northern helmeted curassow
Range: Northern South America, in Colombia and Venezula
Habitat: Humid forests (in mountains)
Conservation Status: Threatened
Scientific Name: Crax pauxi pauxi

This unusual-looking bird is named for the large bluish-grey “helmet” on its forehead. Curassows live in the dense, cool mountain forest. As they move about, the undigested seeds of the fruit they eat are left behind in the birds’ droppings. In this way, curassows play a vital role in renewing the forest. Habitat loss and hunting are taking a toll on the number of wild curassows.
