The colorful lorikeet is a member of the parrot family. It feeds mainly on fruits and nectar, using its brush-like tongue to lap up the syrupy nectar from flowers.

Lorikeets are very social. They feed in flocks of about 20 birds, but may roost in flocks of up to a thousand lorikeets. The birds are very noisy and chatter almost constantly.  Their shrill calls can be heard throughout the forest.

A mated pair of lorikeets often stays together for life.
