These shy, elusive ground dwellers live in grasslands, scrub and open woodlands. When danger is near, they stand very still in an attempt to pass unnoticed.

Tinamous build nests in the shelter of bushes. Once the female has laid her eggs, she abandons them to the male. He sits on them and raises the chicks when they hatch.
