Butorides virescens |
This small wading bird is well adapted for its lifestyle. Its long legs allow it to wade in shallow water, while its long neck and thin, pointed bill help it catch its prey. Green herons feed on fish, frogs, crustaceans, and other aquatic animals. They are patient hunters, often standing motionless as they wait for prey to pass by. At other times, they've been observed luring fish to the surface by cleverly "baiting" them with feathers or insects.
