Like the poison frogs from Central and South America, the mantella frogs from Madagascar use their bright colors to defend their territories from other males during courtship, as well as to warn would-be predators that they are poisonous to eat. Skin alkaloids (chemical poisons), similar to those found in poison dart frogs, occur in this species and several other mantella frogs.
